The Blind Owl · scene 76 of 77 · part two

Her eye in his fist; the old man in the mirror

Coughing the old man's dry laugh, he returns to his room and by lamplight opens his fist to find her eye, his body drenched in blood. In the mirror he has become the old junk dealer, white-haired and harelipped, and laughs an empty laugh.

For the illustration A white-haired, split-lipped face in a mirror behind a bloody open palm holding an eye.

The text of the scene

Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.

Meanwhile I began to cough; but this was not a cough; it was a dry, grating sound that made the hair stand up on one’s body.

P208.L02

Frightened, I threw my cloak over my shoulders and went back to my own room.

P208.L03

In the light of the oil lamp I opened my fist; I saw that her eye was in my hand and that my whole body was drenched in blood.

P209.L01

I went before the mirror, but out of sheer fear I held my hands in front of my face.

P209.L02

I saw that I had become like—no, actually become—the old junk dealer.

P209.L03

The hair of my head and beard was like that of someone who comes out alive from a room where there had been a cobra; it had all turned white.

P209.L04

My lip was split like the old man’s; my eyes were without eyelashes; a tuft of white hair stuck out from my chest, and a new spirit had entered my body.

P209.L05

I thought in an entirely different way; I felt differently, and I could not rescue myself from him, from the demon that had awakened within me.

P209.L06

While I still held my hand in front of my face, I burst into laughter involuntarily, a laugh more violent than the first, which made my being tremble.

P209.L07

A deep laugh that it was not clear from which lost hollow of my body it emerged!

P209.L08

An empty laugh that only echoed in my throat and came out of emptiness.

P209.L09

I had become the old junk dealer.
