The text of the scene
Sadegh Hedayat’s Persian beside our literal English, line by line.
From the intensity of my anxiety, it was as though I had awakened from a deep and lengthy sleep!
I rubbed my eyes. I was in my same former room.
It was half-light, and cloud and mist covered the windowpanes. A rooster’s crow could be heard from far away.
In the brazier before me the glowing embers had become cold ash and hung upon a single puff of breath.
I felt that my thoughts, like the glowing embers, had become hollow and ashen and hung upon a single puff of breath.
The first thing I searched for was the Ragha vase that I had taken from the old carriage driver in the cemetery; but the vase was not before me.
I looked and saw by the door someone with a bent shadow ... no, this person was a hunchbacked old man who had wrapped his head and face in a scarf
and was holding under his arm something shaped like a jar, wrapped in a dirty handkerchief.
He was giving a dry, grating laugh that made the hair on a person’s body stand on end.
Just as I wanted to rise from my place, he went out through the door of the room.
I got up; I wanted to run after him and take that jar, that wrapped handkerchief, from him; but the old man had gone away with a particular nimbleness.
I returned and opened the window of my room facing the alley;
I saw the old man’s bent figure in the alley, his shoulders trembling from the force of his laughter, holding that wrapped handkerchief beneath his arm,
going along stumbling and rising until he disappeared completely behind the mist.
I saw that my clothes were torn, and from head to foot I was stained with clotted blood;
two golden wasp-flies were flying around me and little white worms were writhing together over my body,
and the weight of a dead person was pressing upon my chest.
