New Naqqali Manga, Issue 3: Rostam and Sohrab, Part Two: The Father

By New Naqqali

Iran’s greatest champion is called to face a boy no one can name.

Kay Kavus summons Rostam from Zabul to face the young Turanian champion who has taken the White Fortress. Rostam laughs, drinks for days, and is nearly hanged by the furious Shah. In disguise he watches Sohrab at a Turanian feast and kills Zhendeh Razm, the one man who could have told them who they were; Sohrab makes his prisoner Hajir name Iran’s chiefs banner by banner, and Hajir hides the one name that matters. At last father and son meet face to face, and the boy asks the question outright. Part Two of the tale, in 157 panels across 80 pages of black-and-white ink with twelve full-colour pages; every caption is a couplet of Ferdowsi’s poem in our rhyming English verse. With a cast page, a map, an afterword, the night of Zhendeh Razm in full verse, and a glossary. The tale ends in Issue 4, The Tragedy.
