New Naqqali Manga, Issue 4: Rostam and Sohrab, Part Three: The Tragedy
By New Naqqali
Three days on a narrow field. A father, a son, and a name spoken too late.
For three days Rostam and Sohrab fight on a narrow field between the armies. Sohrab throws his father and spares him; Rostam, given a second chance, does not spare his son. Only as the boy lies dying does the armlet his mother tied on his arm tell Rostam who he is. Kavus refuses the healing elixir, Rostam carries his son home to Zabul, and in Samangan Tahmineh mourns him for a year. The last part of the tale, in 182 panels across 88 pages of black-and-white ink with thirteen full-colour pages; every caption is a couplet of Ferdowsi’s poem in our rhyming English verse, and the death of Sohrab is shown through faces and hands, never the wound. With a cast page, a map, an afterword, Tahmineh’s lament and part of Rostam’s in full verse, and a glossary.
