Mardas Falls into the Pit
From A4.2, Zahhak and His Father. It illustrates A4.2.39–45:
- A4.2.39Before the dawn, Mardas would rise each day,And make himself prepared to kneel and pray.
- A4.2.40He washed his head and body out of sight; No servant bore a lamp before the light.
- A4.2.41The evil one dug deep into the ground,Along the path where Mardas made his round.
- A4.2.42He covered it with brush and leafy screen,Then smoothed the road till no dark trap was seen.
- A4.2.43While night still held the garden in its gloom,The Arab lord walked unaware of doom.
- A4.2.44As Mardas neared the hidden pit that day,His royal fortune turned and fell away.
- A4.2.45His back was broken when he struck below,And death closed over Mardas, laid him low.
