The Bilingual Poem

Our English verse beside Ferdowsi’s Persian, couplet by couplet, with a commentary on every chapter.

Now open: A0–A9 · 93 chapters · 4,230 couplets · 639 notes. The rest of the poem will follow, book by book.

Each chapter begins with how five texts treat it: our translation, the Moscow critical text, Jules Mohl’s edition, Jalal Khaleghi-Motlagh’s edition and the digital text at Ganjoor. Then comes the parallel text, English on the left and Persian on the right; select a couplet’s number to open its note.

This is a comparative commentary, not a new critical edition of the Persian. The Persian shown is Ganjoor’s text unless a row names a printed source; A9.3–A9.6 give Mohl’s text, because Ganjoor omits those stories. Each book’s page sets out the method and the editions consulted.
