Afrasiab at the Empty Ferry
From B10.28, Kay Khosrow Crosses the Jihun. It illustrates B10.28.31–42 (to B10.28.44):
- B10.28.31Still sore afraid, he neared the ferry lane,The Turanian army reached the river plain.
- B10.28.32He saw no boat, no rider in the stream;Afrasiab cried out, his wrath a scream:
- B10.28.33“How did that Div cross Jihun’s raging span? What secret path was found by such a man?”
- B10.28.34The ferryman replied: “My father keptThis toll before me; I in turn accept.
- B10.28.35Yet never have I heard or seen it saidThat Jihun could be crossed like earth instead.
- B10.28.36In flood-time no one entering survives; The waves drag all beneath and take their lives.
- B10.28.37Yet these three riders crossed as though they flew,As if the sky itself had borne them through.
- B10.28.38They seemed as though the wind itself gave birth,Or Yazdan sent them among men on earth.”
- B10.28.39Afrasiab grew pale at what was told,And sighed from grief, his breath and spirit cold.
- B10.28.40He said: “Launch now the boat with all your might;Make ready fast and follow in their flight.
- B10.28.41See where the fugitives have gone from here,Or whether they lie sleeping somewhere near.
- B10.28.42Bring up the boat; no longer pause or wait;We must discover where they stopped of late.”
