Afrasiab Mourns His Son Surkha
From B10.7, Afrasiab Marches to Avenge His Son. It illustrates B10.7.1–10:
- B10.7.1When Turan’s troops returned from battle red,Blood stained each body, dust lay on each head.
- B10.7.2They said: “The noble chief has met his end,His rising fortune sank where spears descend.
- B10.7.3His head was severed; all the troops withdrew,Their fill of war behind them as they flew.
- B10.7.4The men of Iran stood again for war,Their hearts still burned for Siavash’s gore.”
- B10.7.5Afrasiab then bent his crowned head low,And tore his hair while tears began to flow.
- B10.7.6He cast the dust upon his head and cried,And tore his royal robes from side to side.
- B10.7.7“O famed sepahbod, hero of the fight!Your rosy face once shone with moonlike light.
- B10.7.8Your form and noble bearing fade from sight; No rest for me till vengeance claims its right.”
- B10.7.9Then to his troops: “Our food and sleep are done;No rest remains until revenge is won.
- B10.7.10Let armor be your bed and war your breath,And fix your minds on vengeance and on death.”
