Khosrow Swears the Oath Before the Flame
From B11.4, The Vow of Vengeance against Afrasiab. It illustrates B11.4.21–28:
- B11.4.21When Khosrow heard these words, both grave and clear,He faced the sacred flame in holy fear.
- B11.4.22And swore: “By God, the ruler over all,By day’s bright face and lapis night’s dark pall,
- B11.4.23By sun and moon, by throne and crown I swear,These royal signs attest the vow I bear;
- B11.4.24By royal seal and sword, by diadem,My oath is bound and witnessed here through them.
- B11.4.25No love for Afrasiab shall I embrace,Nor even in a dream behold his face.”
- B11.4.26In Pahlavi they wrote the oath by hand,With musk-water in the royal record grand.
- B11.4.27Then Zal and Rostam witnessed it that day,And all the chiefs bore witness in array.
- B11.4.28The written oath, as zanhar, signed and sealed,Was placed with Rostam, who would be its shield.
