Bahram Challenges the Watchers
From B12.5, Bahram Meets Forood on the Mountain. It illustrates B12.5.12–22:
- B12.5.12When Bahram nearer to the summit drew,His thunderous challenge through the mountain flew:
- B12.5.13“Who are you standing on the mountain height?Do you not see that vast assembled might?
- B12.5.14Do you not hear the buq and koust arise,Or fear brave Tus beneath the open skies?”
- B12.5.15The prince replied: “No harshness have you known;Speak gently, seasoned chief, with tempered tone.
- B12.5.16You are no lion raging in the plain,Nor am I Gur-e-Khar beneath your rein.
- B12.5.17You do not stand above me in your might,In courage, strength, or manhood in the fight.
- B12.5.18Consider hand and foot, and heart and head,And wit and speech by which all men are led;
- B12.5.19Consider eyes and ears and judgment clear;Judge whether all these gifts in me appear.
- B12.5.20If so, then cast aside your foolish threat,And speak with sense before you must regret.
- B12.5.21If you will answer, I would question you,And gladly hear a counsel wise and true.”
- B12.5.22Then Bahram said: “Ask all you wish to know;You stand in heaven, while I remain below.”
