Rostam Hears the Chiefs by Lamplight
From B13.26, The Coming of Rostam. It illustrates B13.26.32–43 (to B13.26.50):
- B13.26.32That warrior, that luster of the land,Set up his camp-enclosure where he planned.
- B13.26.33Nimruz’s forces camped behind their lord;Upon the height his lofty standard soared.
- B13.26.34Great Rostam sat upon a royal seat,The chiefs assembled round him at his feet.
- B13.26.35Gudarz and Giv sat near him, Tus in sight,Before the lord of war one lamp burned bright.
- B13.26.36He spoke at length of what they saw befall,Of how the chiefs and troops had faced it all,
- B13.26.37And whether sun and moon would aid them still,Or fortune turn against the warriors’ will.
- B13.26.38The chiefs described the number of their foes,And how that throng across the valley rose.
- B13.26.39They spoke of fierce Kamus and Chin’s high lord,Manshur, Shangul, and all their warrior horde.
- B13.26.40“Of great Kamus himself much may be said;We saw him clearly where the battle spread.
- B13.26.41He is a tree whose fruit is gorz and blade;Though clouds rain stones, he does not stand afraid.
- B13.26.42He would not flee from elephants of war;His heart seeks strife, his head seeks vengeance more.
- B13.26.43Earth scarcely holds Manshur beneath its sky;No chief commands such armies low or high.
