Bijan Finds the Abandoned Field
From B14.16, Rostam Divides the Spoils. It illustrates B14.16.40–48:
- B14.16.40When night’s rust passed and day’s bright falchion gleamed,The earth like ruby in the daylight beamed.
- B14.16.41The parda-saray’s tabira rang high; The chiefs rose up; then came great Rostam’s cry:
- B14.16.42“No trace of wise Piran has met our eyes;Return now to the field beneath the skies.
- B14.16.43Send out the troops to seek him everywhere;Search all the field; lay every hiding bare.”
- B14.16.44Bijan the lion-man went on his way,To where the armies fought the former day.
- B14.16.45He saw a world of corpses, wealth displayed,And seats on every side, still richly laid.
- B14.16.46The land was strewn with wounded men around,Flung down upon the earth, in fetters bound.
- B14.16.47No living foe stood free upon the ground; The tents and parda-saray could be found.
- B14.16.48Then bitter news reached Rostam from the plain:“The land is empty of the Turkish train.”
