Zal's Host Marches from Zabul
From B2.3, Zal Leads Iran against Afrasiab. It illustrates B2.3.1–8:
- B2.3.1A bead was struck in bowl on elephant’s back,Its voice rolled several mil along the track.
- B2.3.2The koust resounded, karnays split the sky,And elephants bore Indian daray high.
- B2.3.3From Zabul Resurrection rose and cried:“Rise, sleeping earth!”; the call rang far and wide.
- B2.3.4An army surged like lions toward the fray,Their hands washed red with blood along the way.
- B2.3.5In front rode Rostam, valor’s very seal,Behind, the chiefs in battle-hardened steel.
- B2.3.6Across each vale and meadow stretched the force,No crow could find above an open course.
- B2.3.7The tabiras thundered through the martial roar,Till head from foot could be discerned no more.
- B2.3.8Thus Zal advanced as spring adorned the land,And led from Zabul all his gathered band.
