Rakhsh Kills the Lion in the Reeds
From B5.1, Rakhsh Fights a Lion. It illustrates B5.1.14–20:
- B5.1.14One watch had passed; the lion neared his bed,And saw brave Rakhsh beside the sleeper’s head.
- B5.1.15He saw the steed, and Rostam sleeping sound,An elephantine body, like a mound.
- B5.1.16“First crush the horse,” he thought, “and clear my way;The sleeping man will then become my prey.”
- B5.1.17He sprang; but Rakhsh, like fire, rose in flame,And charged the lion as the lion came.
- B5.1.18He struck its head with both forelegs in rage,Then seized its back, his sharpened jaws a cage.
- B5.1.19He smashed the lion hard against the ground,And tore it till no trace of life was found.
- B5.1.20Then Rostam woke and saw the lion slain,Its shattered body stretched across the plain.
