Rostam Lifts the White Div
From B5.7, Rostam Slays the White Div. It illustrates B5.7.25–36 (to B5.7.40):
- B5.7.25It woke and surged, a black mount armed for fight,With iron arms and helmet iron-bright.
- B5.7.26A millstone in its grasp it raised and threw,Then rushed on Rostam as the missile flew.
- B5.7.27For one brief breath his heart knew sudden dread; He saw what mortal peril lay ahead.
- B5.7.28Like raging lion Rostam struck awayOne thigh and leg from White Div in the fray.
- B5.7.29Though maimed, upon one leg it fought him still; Its fury shook the cavern with its will.
- B5.7.30It overturned the cavern in its rage; The walls resounded like a shattered cage.
- B5.7.31It seized at Rostam’s neck with crushing grip,And strove to make the Pahlevan’s footing slip.
- B5.7.32They grappled close and tore at flesh and bone,Each fought as though the world were his alone.
- B5.7.33Their streaming blood made mud across the ground,While flesh was torn and scattered all around.
- B5.7.34They wrestled long, each striving to prevail,Until the cavern echoed with travail.
- B5.7.35Then Rostam thought: “If I survive today,I shall live forever after this affray.”
- B5.7.36The White Div thought: “Sweet life is lost to me;If I escape this dragon, none shall see.
