Rostam Denies His Name

Rostam Denies His Name

From B8.17, Sohrab Attacks Kavus’s Army. It illustrates B8.17.58–64:

  • B8.17.58
At Rostam’s words, young Sohrab’s heart leapt high;He said, “One question; give me true reply.
  • B8.17.59
Tell me the truth of your ancestral line,And make my heart rejoice with some clear sign.
  • B8.17.60
I think that you are Rostam, Zal’s great son,Whose line from noble Nariman has run.”
  • B8.17.61
But Rostam answered, “Do not make that claim;I am not he, nor born of Zal’s great name.
  • B8.17.62
Great Rostam is the Pahlevan in might;I am a lesser warrior in his sight.
  • B8.17.63
I own no throne, nor share so high a fate;Nor do I hold his rank or royal state.”
  • B8.17.64
Sohrab despaired; all former hope withdrawn,And all the brightness faded from the dawn.
