The Chiefs Stay Rostam's Hand
From B8.21, The Tragedy of Sohrab. It illustrates B8.21.102–110:
- B8.21.102Then Rostam left that place, his spirit torn,And came again to where his son lay worn.
- B8.21.103The chiefs went with him, sorrow in each face:Tus, Gudarz, Gostaham approached the place.
- B8.21.104The gathered army raised its voice in prayerFor that beloved youth whom death would snare.
- B8.21.105“May Yazdan alone bring healing to his plight,And make these crushing sorrows turn to light.”
- B8.21.106Then Rostam took a khanjar in his hand,To sever his own head there on the sand.
- B8.21.107The chiefs clung fast and held the hero tight,While blood-like tears ran down before his sight.
- B8.21.108Then Gudarz said: “What profit can you gainBy filling all the world with smoke and pain?
- B8.21.109Though you should wound yourself a hundredfold,What ease would reach the youth whom death may hold?
- B8.21.110If any span of life remains to stay,He still will live; do not throw yours away.
