Zal Meets Sohrab's Bier
From B8.24, Rostam Returns to Zabulistan. It illustrates B8.24.7–14:
- B8.24.7When Zal, great son of Sahm, beheld the bier,He left his golden-reined horse and drew near.
- B8.24.8Rostam walked on before it, pale and torn,His garments rent, his heart with sorrow worn.
- B8.24.9The warriors loosed their girdles, bent in woe,And bowed their heads to dust in mourning low.
- B8.24.10They lowered Sohrab’s coffin from the camel’s side,And mourned the famed young warrior who had died.
- B8.24.11They cried aloud for Sohrab, young and brave,Whose name deserved a world beyond the grave.
- B8.24.12Before his father Rostam bowed his head,And drew the gold-worked covering from the dead.
- B8.24.13He said in grief: “Look; Sahm the rider liesWithin this narrow coffin, to our eyes.”
- B8.24.14Blood-tears streamed down where aged Zal now sighs,As grief for Sohrab filled his broken cries.
