The Sage Reads Afrasiab's Dream
From B9.20, Afrasiab Seeks the Sages’ Counsel. It illustrates B9.20.5–16 (to B9.20.24):
- B9.20.5He heaped them gold and silver in their sight,To ease their fear and set their spirits right.
- B9.20.6He told the dream entire, from first to last,And asked what hidden meaning it forecast.
- B9.20.7A Mobad heard the dream and stood afraid,And asked safe-conduct before truth was laid.
- B9.20.8He said: “First pledge your tongue to guard us here,And bind your royal word against our fear.
- B9.20.9Then all we know we openly shall say,And trust your justice when we speak today.”
- B9.20.10The king then swore that none should come to harm,Nor blame be laid, whatever caused alarm.
- B9.20.11Then one among them, subtle, keen of mind,And skilled in matters hidden and refined,
- B9.20.12Stood forth and said: “O ruler of the throne,This vision’s hidden meaning I shall make known.
- B9.20.13From Iran comes an army swift and strong,Led on by chiefs whose deeds have echoed long.
- B9.20.14Young Siavash rides foremost at their head,With royal blood and banners round him spread.
- B9.20.15With him come counselors seasoned by the years,Who know the turns of fortune as it veers.
- B9.20.16He comes beneath an ascendant darkly cast,That threatens Turan’s realm with ruin vast.
