The False Tears of Garsivaz
From B9.48, Garsivaz Returns to Siavash. It illustrates B9.48.25–36:
- B9.48.25He fixed his gaze and silence held him fast,While yellow tears across his lashes passed.
- B9.48.26False tears ran down; within, he shaped the snareBy which the prince would fall into despair.
- B9.48.27The prince beheld him, spoke in gentle tone:“My brother, why this grief? What pain is known?
- B9.48.28What grief has clouded all your spirit so?Has royal anger laid you under woe?
- B9.48.29Come, I will go with you, prepared to fight,If Afrasiab has denied your right.
- B9.48.30Against his army I will take the field,And force the Shah of Turan’s men to yield.
- B9.48.31If he has harmed you, I will right the wrong,And bring the truth to light that hid so long.
- B9.48.32If some declared foe troubles you with strife,I stand your friend in all affairs of life.
- B9.48.33In battle too, my strength shall guard your way,And those who seek your harm I shall repay.
- B9.48.34If slander cast you from your rightful seat,Or falsehood stained your honor with deceit,
- B9.48.35Then trust in me to right the wrong you bear,And tear the lying slander from the air.
- B9.48.36Reveal the secret of this hidden snake;Whatever coils within, my hand shall break.”
