Manijeh Brings Bread to the Pit
From C2.10, Bijan Is Put in Bonds. It illustrates C2.10.21–31:
- C2.10.21They reached the princess’ palace, seized her store,And cast her wealth in heaps across the floor.
- C2.10.22Manijeh was left bare, without a veil,Barefoot, bareheaded, and her face grown pale.
- C2.10.23They dragged her to the pit; her heart was blood,Her face a channel running like a flood.
- C2.10.24Garsivaz said, “Look here, and you shall seeYour home; the prisoner’s servant you shall be.”
- C2.10.25Manijeh stayed, with anguish in her breast,And blood-drops on her cheeks, and found no rest.
- C2.10.26He turned away; Manijeh, bride of woe,Roamed through the plain with nowhere else to go.
- C2.10.27When one full day and night had passed in grief,She scraped a handbreadth opening for relief.
- C2.10.28When from the mountain’s crest the sun raised head,Manijeh went from door to door for bread.
- C2.10.29Through the long day she gathered, crust by crust,And brought it to the pit-hole through the dust.
- C2.10.30She gave it to Bijan, and wept her fill,And in that ill-starred living lingered still.
- C2.10.31With sigh and cry, through every hour she keptThat pit’s own watch, and never left, but wept.
