Bijan Rises to Accept the Boar Quest
From C2.2, Irman’s People Appeal to Khosrow. It illustrates C2.2.45–56 (to C2.2.66):
- C2.2.45At his command the treasurer took heed,And brought a golden salver for the deed.
- C2.2.46They poured on it a jewel of every kind,Each mingled with the next, and none behind.
- C2.2.47Ten steeds with golden bridles then appeared,And Kavus’s brand on every flank was seared.
- C2.2.48In Roman brocade all were richly dressed; The famed of that great gathering addressed.
- C2.2.49Then said the lord of earth: “My champions praisedIn every mouth, and by all blessing raised:
- C2.2.50Who, for my honor’s sake, will suffer this,And after make my treasure wholly his?”
- C2.2.51No warrior there replied with any word,Until the son of Giv stood, deeply stirred.
- C2.2.52Bold Bijan rose before that noble line,And blessed the Shah beneath the royal sign:
- C2.2.53“May no new master ever hold your hall;May all the world obey your sovereign call.
- C2.2.54I am the one who gives ear to your will;Your covenant runs through the whole world still.
- C2.2.55At your command I undertake this task;My life and wealth are yours for all you ask.”
- C2.2.56But Giv, who stood nearby, was not content; His son’s bold words filled him with sharp dissent.
