Manijeh Welcomes Bijan into Her Tent
From C2.6, Bijan Goes to Manijeh’s Tent. It illustrates C2.6.3–12:
- C2.6.3He passed the curtain in, a cypress high,Gold-girdled at the waist for every eye.
- C2.6.4Manijeh came and clasped him to her breast,And loosed the royal girdle from her guest.
- C2.6.5She asked him of the road, and of his train,And who had shared the boar-hunt on that plain.
- C2.6.6“Why torture such a face, such farr, such heightWith gorz, O fair of countenance and bright?”
- C2.6.7They bathed his feet with musk and rose perfume,And then made haste to eat within the room.
- C2.6.8They set the board with dishes of each kind,And made a feast beyond the reach of mind.
- C2.6.9They made a place for rud and wine and clearedThe tent of every stranger who appeared.
- C2.6.10The serving-women stood upon their feet,With barbat, chang, and songs of music sweet.
- C2.6.11Brocade had made the ground a peacock’s hue,And scattered dinars, leopard-spotted through.
- C2.6.12The tent enclosure glittered, fold on fold,With musk and jewels, ambergris and gold.
