Letter of Victory to Kavus
From C4.12, Khosrow Sends News of Victory to Kavus. It illustrates C4.12.1–12 (to C4.12.13):
- C4.12.1Khosrow then called a ready scribe to hand,With paper, musk, and abir at command.
- C4.12.2They wrote a letter from the battlefield,To tell Kavus what victory had revealed.
- C4.12.3The letter first gave praise to God, whose willProvides our guidance through both good and ill.
- C4.12.4Khosrow declared: “May my great monarch’s mightStand like the mountains, steadfast in their height.
- C4.12.5He fears for me as though I were his son;May grief afflict his foes, each hostile one.
- C4.12.6From fair Iran I reached Farab’s broad land;Three nights we fought three battles on its sand.
- C4.12.7Afrasiab’s horsemen passed all count and lore,Beyond what dreaming sages knew before.
- C4.12.8Three hundred severed heads I send as signs,From famed sepahbods of his battle lines.
- C4.12.9His brother, son, and kinsmen met their end,With honored chiefs on whom he could depend.
- C4.12.10Two hundred captive chiefs I send; in might,Each matched a hundred lions in the fight.
- C4.12.11We fought upon Khwarazm’s open plain,And Heaven’s blessing crowned our hard campaign.
- C4.12.12Afrasiab has fled; we press behind,To see what turn of fortune we shall find.”
