The Dragon Bites the Toothed Blade
From C5.12, Goshtasb Slays the Dragon. It illustrates C5.12.5–11:
- C5.12.5Goshtasb remained before the mountain lair,Where that fierce dragon poisoned all the air.
- C5.12.6The dragon saw him, drew a sucking breath,And pulled him toward its jaws, the gates of death.
- C5.12.7He slung his helmet from the saddle-bow,And shot a hail of arrows at his foe.
- C5.12.8The dragon closed upon him in the fray; The youthful warrior strove to break away.
- C5.12.9He thrust the toothed blade in its mouth and prayedTo God, the Giver of all good, for aid.
- C5.12.10The dragon bit the blade; its teeth pressed tight,And drove each edge into its mouth outright.
- C5.12.11Blood mixed with poison washed the mountainside; Its strength ebbed with the venom’s draining tide.
