Goshtasb Demands the Crown at the Feast
From C5.2, Goshtasb Departs in Anger. It illustrates C5.2.8–19 (to C5.2.24):
- C5.2.8One day in Pars they set the royal seatBeneath a tree that scattered blossoms sweet.
- C5.2.9Lohrasp commanded that the chiefs appear; The leaders of his warriors gathered near.
- C5.2.10They called for wine beside the royal board,And brought delight to their world-ruling lord.
- C5.2.11Goshtasb drank wine, then rose before their sight,And spoke: “O Shah, whose rule is just and right,
- C5.2.12May your accession to the throne be blessed;May lasting fame forever crown your crest.
- C5.2.13God gave you crown and belt to mark your state; So did just Kay Khosrow, the good and great.
- C5.2.14Now here I stand, a slave before your gate,A servant of your crown and royal fate.
- C5.2.15Among the men who face my sword in fight,One warrior alone exceeds my might:
- C5.2.16That one is Rostam, Zal’s son, Sahm’s heir;No man alive can with his strength compare.
- C5.2.17When Kay Khosrow took thought for you that day,He gave you throne and crown, then passed away.
- C5.2.18If I am worthy, name me next in line; Then let the Kayanian crown, throne be mine.
- C5.2.19I still will stand before you as your slave,And hail you sovereign, generous and brave.”
