The Anvil Splits Beneath Goshtasb's Hammer
From C5.5, Goshtasb Arrives in Rum. It illustrates C5.5.52–61:
- C5.5.52Goshtasb sat long within the smithy’s glow,Until the craftsman wished that he would go.
- C5.5.53The smith said, “Good man, why sit waiting here? What do you seek? Explain and make it clear.”
- C5.5.54Goshtasb replied, “Good fortune on your skill! No hammer or hard work shall break my will.
- C5.5.55If you will keep me, I shall lend a hand; This hammer and this anvil I command.”
- C5.5.56When Burab heard the prince explain his aim,He took him as a helper at the flame.
- C5.5.57He heated up a heavy iron ball,Then brought it to the anvil in the stall.
- C5.5.58They gave Goshtasb a hammer, hard to bear; The smiths assembled round to watch and stare.
- C5.5.59He struck; the ball and anvil split in two;Throughout the market, talk and wonder grew.
- C5.5.60Burab grew frightened: “Young man, you are strong; No forge or anvil bears such blows for long,
- C5.5.61Nor hammer, iron, stone, or bellows will!”Goshtasb heard; his heart grew darker still.
