From C6.22, Gurazm Slanders Esfandiyar. It illustrates C6.22.18–29 (to C6.22.33):
- C6.22.18The king dismissed the court and called him near:“Come, tell me all. Let every word be clear.
- C6.22.19Reveal the secret of this foe of mine;Explain to me his hidden ill design.”
- C6.22.20Gurazm, whose mind was evil, answered, stern:“To do the right is wisdom’s first concern.
- C6.22.21The Shah has granted every wish I made;I must not keep this treason in the shade.
- C6.22.22I will not hide my counsel out of fear,Although the Shah may find it hard to hear.
- C6.22.23I shall reveal the secret, come what may,Although the Shah should order me away.
- C6.22.24To speak, though he may doubt the truth I bring,Is better than to hide so grave a thing.
- C6.22.25Know this, great Shah: your son prepares to fightAgainst your throne and all your royal might.
- C6.22.26The troops have flocked to him in countless bands,And all men turn toward him with ready hands.
- C6.22.27His purpose is to put you into chains; He cannot bear your crown while power remains.
- C6.22.28When he has seized and bound your royal frame,He means to rule the world in his own name.
- C6.22.29You know Esfandiyar has none his peerIn battle; none will face him without fear.
