Esfandiyar and Arjasp Fight in the Hall
From C7.12, Esfandiyar Slays Arjasp. It illustrates C7.12.24–32:
- C7.12.24Arjasp awoke, alarmed by all the din,And rose in fury at the clash within.
- C7.12.25In Roman helm and jowshan all arrayed,He gripped his khanjar with its gleaming blade.
- C7.12.26With battle fury burning in his breast,He roared aloud, by blood and wrath possessed.
- C7.12.27From palace halls brave Esfandiyar sprang,His Indian sword held ready as steel rang.
- C7.12.28He cried, “This merchant brings the wares long due:A blade of vengeance, sharp and proven true.
- C7.12.29This gift from Lohrasp bears a royal seal;Goshtasb’s own mark upon its deadly steel.”
- C7.12.30They closed in savage combat, blade to blade,And sword-strokes rang where death already played.
- C7.12.31At waist and head they struck with blow on blow,Till fierce Arjasp’s attack grew faint and slow.
- C7.12.32No part of him was whole; he streamed with gore,His elephant-like bulk fell to the floor.
