The Funeral Train Leaves Zabul
From C8.29, Bishutan Brings Esfandiyar Home. It illustrates C8.29.6–14:
- C8.29.6Then Rostam chose out forty camels tall,In Chinese brocade housings, one and all.
- C8.29.7Two camels bore the coffin of the slain;Troops flanked it, led, and followed in the train.
- C8.29.8With faces torn and hair plucked out, they criedHis name; their souls still sought him at their side.
- C8.29.9Tabiras overturned, the banners torn;In blue and purple, all were dressed to mourn.
- C8.29.10Before the troops, Bishutan led the steed,Its forelock, tail both shorn; a mournful deed.
- C8.29.11The saddle on its back was turned around; The gorz hung from the saddle, firmly bound.
- C8.29.12His famous helm and battle-coat he wore,His robes and warrior’s coif, the saddle bore.
- C8.29.13The troops moved on; young Bahman stayed to weepIn Zabul, shedding heart’s blood, anguish deep.
- C8.29.14The matchless Rostam took him to his hall,And cherished him as life through sorrow’s pall.
