Zal Watches Bahman Cross the Hirmund
From C8.7, Bahman Arrives in Zabul. It illustrates C8.7.4–13:
- C8.7.4The noble youth crossed Hirmund’s rushing tide,Tall as a cypress in his youthful pride.
- C8.7.5The watchman saw him from the river’s side,And raised a cry through Zabul far and wide:
- C8.7.6“A warlike horseman now has crossed the streamOn sable steed whose golden trappings gleam.
- C8.7.7Behind him riders of a humbler rankPassed on at ease beside the riverbank.”
- C8.7.8Zal mounted swiftly, heeding the alarm,His kamand strapped, his gorz upon his arm.
- C8.7.9He reached the watchtower, saw Bahman draw near,And from his heart there rose a sigh of fear.
- C8.7.10He said, “This is a Pahlevan of fame,In royal robes that well befit his name.
- C8.7.11Indeed, he comes from Lohrasp’s royal line;May his arrival make our country shine.”
- C8.7.12He left the tower and rode toward the gate,Then paused in thought, still mounted, there to wait.
- C8.7.13Soon Bahman came, his royal banner high;He did not know old Zal as he rode by.
