The Golden Buffaloes of Jamshid
From D10.10, Bahram Finds the Treasures of Jamshid. It illustrates D10.10.25–36 (to D10.10.41):
- D10.10.25The high Mobad went through the opened door,With one companion, seeking out the store.
- D10.10.26They found one chamber, long and wide and high,A wonder hidden from the world and sky.
- D10.10.27Two golden buffaloes bent down to drinkBefore a golden trough with jeweled brink.
- D10.10.28The trough held green gems mingled with the redOf precious rubies heaped within its bed.
- D10.10.29Those buffaloes seemed Taurus brought to earth,Hollow, and filled with fruit of priceless worth.
- D10.10.30With pomegranates, apples, quince each side; The quinces held bright pearls like drops inside.
- D10.10.31The buffaloes had ruby eyes that gleamed,Though age had touched their heads where gold still beamed.
- D10.10.32Around them stood gold lions, proud and grand,With Gur-e-Khars arranged on every hand.
- D10.10.33Some creatures had bright ruby eyes inlaid,And some with crystal eyes were deftly made.
- D10.10.34There golden pheasants, peacocks too, were seen,With gem-bright breasts and eyes of jeweled sheen.
- D10.10.35The minister returned to tell the kingWhat wealth that hidden treasure-house would bring.
- D10.10.36He urged the Shah, “Arise and see this store;A wealth of treasure lies behind that door.
