The Good Wife's Cow Gives Milk Again
From D10.12, Bahram’s Dragon-Slaying and Visit to a Yokel. It illustrates D10.12.83–91:
- D10.12.83On hearing this, the Shah repented then,And prayed to God, the righteous Judge of men:
- D10.12.84“O You supreme, Almighty over fate,Whose judgment opens Fortune’s every gate,
- D10.12.85If ever my heart turns away from right,Let kingly throne no longer bless my sight.”
- D10.12.86That blessed dame, whose faith was firm and good,Once more tried milking her cow as she should.
- D10.12.87In God’s own name she touched the teat, and prayed:“Let flow the milk that in the udder stayed.”
- D10.12.88The milk flowed forth; the good wife cried in joy,“O God, whose works no mortal can destroy,
- D10.12.89You have recalled the monarch from his wrong,And made his love of justice firm and strong.”
- D10.12.90She turned then to her husband where he stood:“The king’s lost justice has come back for good.
- D10.12.91Rejoice and laugh; this is the Maker’s boonTo us beneath the sun and fading moon.”
