The Luris Sent Out with Their Lutes
From D10.39, Bahram Calls the Gypsies from Hindustan. It illustrates D10.39.14–22:
- D10.39.14When they arrived, the Shah received the folk,And gave to each an ox to bear the yoke.
- D10.39.15An ass he gave to each for loads to bear,And bade them farm the land with skill and care.
- D10.39.16His officers gave wheat enough to sow,A thousand loads, to make their harvest grow.
- D10.39.17“They shall use ox and ass to work the field,And sow this wheat to make the harvest yield.
- D10.39.18Besides, they shall make music for the poor,And ask no fee, that pleasure may endure.”
- D10.39.19The Luris ate the wheat and oxen too;A year passed; pale of face, to him they drew.
- D10.39.20The Shah said, “Yours was not the farmer’s toil,To scatter seed and reap the fruitful soil.
- D10.39.21Your asses still remain; now load and sing,And make the silken strings of music ring.”
- D10.39.22Thus, seeking bread, they wandered on their way,And roamed as thieves by night as well as day.
