Ram Barzin Kneels by the Dead Prince
From D13.19, The Death of Nushzad. It illustrates D13.19.73–81:
- D13.19.73He sealed his lips; thus Nushzad passed away,A noble, lion-hearted prince, that day.
- D13.19.74When all his troops had heard their prince was slain,They broke and fled across the blood-soaked plain.
- D13.19.75When Ram Barzin learned how Nushzad had died,He went in tears and knelt down at his side.
- D13.19.76The troops ceased slaying on the field of fight,And neither cheered nor plundered in delight.
- D13.19.77They saw the prince laid low in mortal woe,His royal name made dark by overthrow.
- D13.19.78His head lay on a Roman bishop’s breast; The field with wailing gave the dead no rest.
- D13.19.79Ram Barzin, troubled deeply by the sight,Asked what the prince had spoken in his plight.
- D13.19.80“What were the prince’s wishes at the end?”He asked the bishop, speaking as a friend.
- D13.19.81The bishop said, “None but his mother’s eyeMust see his head exposed beneath the sky.
