Iskandar Recognized at Dara's Banquet
From D4.3, Iskandar Visits Dara Disguised as an Ambassador. It illustrates D4.3.48–57:
- D4.3.48Just then the men who, far from home, had madeTheir way to Rum to seek the tribute paid,
- D4.3.49Came from their lodgings to the banquet hall,And walked toward the Shah before them all.
- D4.3.50One saw Iskandar, then approached the throne,And blessed the Shah before he made him known:
- D4.3.51“This is Iskandar, lord of royal grace,Who sits with crown and gorz in Rum’s high place.
- D4.3.52When you commanded us to claim the due,We went to him as envoys sent by you.
- D4.3.53He raged and humbled us before his throne,And warred on you in words, in scornful tone.
- D4.3.54I fled his realm and spurred my steeds in flight,And drove them onward through the dark of night.
- D4.3.55No other man in Rum bears such a face;He boldly comes within this very place.
- D4.3.56He measures all your troops, your treasure’s worth,Your throne and crown, your sovereign might on earth.”
- D4.3.57When Dara heard the tribute-seeker’s claim,He fixed a longer gaze upon his frame.
