Iskandar Reads Dara's Plea
From D4.7, Dara Proposes Peace to Iskandar. It illustrates D4.7.17–21:
- D4.7.17From Kerman sped a camel on its way,To wary Iskandar without delay.
- D4.7.18Iskandar read the scroll, then softly said,“May perfect wisdom crown the monarch’s head!
- D4.7.19Who harms the Shah’s own children or his kin,Or sheltered women, shall no pardon win.
- D4.7.20His only throne shall be the grave’s dark bed,Or from a bough he shall hang till life has fled.
- D4.7.21Let no kin of the Shah know harm or woe,Nor tribute, tax, or treasure shall they owe.
