The Disguised King Pleads for Qaydrush
From D5.19, Iskandar Captures King Faryan’s Fortress. It illustrates D5.19.37–42:
- D5.19.37He raged and told the headsman, “Let him lieBeneath the dust; this man is doomed to die.
- D5.19.38Still bound beside his wife, his life shall end;Your Indian sword his neck in two shall rend.”
- D5.19.39Then in disguise Iskandar kissed the ground,And hailed the Caesar-born, as duty bound:
- D5.19.40“If you will grant this captive’s life to me,Then honored in this gathering I shall be.
- D5.19.41Why kill the guiltless out of vengeful hate?Yazdan who made the world abhors that fate.”
- D5.19.42Then Bitlqun said, “Your pleading spared the two;Their lives have been delivered here through you.”
