- D6.3.33He sent for Sasan, head shepherd of the fold,On a day of driving snow and bitter cold.
- D6.3.34He came, his woolen wrap all snowy white; His heart was split in two by bitter fright.
- D6.3.35Babak cleared the room; the guide withdrew,And all the servants left the chamber too.
- D6.3.36He welcomed young Sasan and drew him near,And seated him beside him with good cheer.
- D6.3.37He asked the shepherd’s lineage and race; The frightened man sat silent in his place.
- D6.3.38“O prince,” he said, “first pledge that I shall live,And shield me from the harm these words may give.
- D6.3.39Then I will tell my lineage, strand by strand;First swear your oath, and take me by the hand:
- D6.3.40That neither open harm nor hidden illShall ever reach me through your act or will.”
- D6.3.41Babak invoked the Giver of all good,And swore his oath, as Sasan asked he should:
- D6.3.42“No harm from me shall ever come to you;In joy and honor I shall keep you too.”
- D6.3.43Then said the youth, “O noble Pahlevan,Know that I am the son of Sasan.
