Young Shapur Hears the Crowded Bridge
From D8.1.1, The Posthumous Birth and Crowning of Shapur. It illustrates D8.1.1.16–27:
- D8.1.1.16The sun turned yellow as the day withdrew,And evening spread its veil of lapis blue.
- D8.1.1.17A roar came from the road by Arvand’s flow; The Shah asked what that sound might mean below.
- D8.1.1.18The Mobad answered that young king of worth:“Pure-hearted Shah, whose steps bring luck to earth,
- D8.1.1.19The market folk now leave their shops to goBack to their homes, as evening shadows grow.
- D8.1.1.20Across the Tigris, meeting face to face,They tread the narrow bridge in crowded space.
- D8.1.1.21Each fears the waves and water far below;Their shouts roar like a torrent in full flow.”
- D8.1.1.22Shapur replied, “O sages of my state,O wise and honored men, in counsel great,
- D8.1.1.23Another bridge must span the river’s track:One lets them leave, the other brings them back.
- D8.1.1.24Let troops and common folk all cross with ease; And those who serve us find the same release.
- D8.1.1.25Let none be burdened on that crowded way;Give freely from our stores the cost to pay.”
- D8.1.1.26The Mobadan rejoiced at what was seen:The tender tree had grown so fresh and green.
- D8.1.1.27As young Shapur commanded, they obeyed;Their chief gave orders, and the plans were laid.
