Bahram Tries the Hundred Arab Steeds
From D9.2, Bahram Goor Is Born and Raised by an Arab. It illustrates D9.2.109–116:
- D9.2.109He hurried out and soon again returnedWith one full hundred steeds whose mettle burned.
- D9.2.110Bahram beheld them and rode on the plain,And wheeled among them, testing heart and rein.
- D9.2.111Yet every horse, though fleet from side to side,Seemed wingless once the prince had climbed astride.
- D9.2.112At length he chose a chestnut broad of breast,Whose wind-like feet outstripped the tested best.
- D9.2.113A second, branded differently, he chose,A bay, as dread as some nahang that rose.
- D9.2.114Its shoes flashed fire beneath its thundering tread,And from its ruddy breast fell drops of red.
- D9.2.115Then Monzer paid what both those steeds were worth; In Kufa’s woodland lay their native earth.
- D9.2.116Bold Bahram took the pair with watchful care,Bright as Azargashasp, a blazing flare.
