Bozorgmehr Wins Three Games
From E2.1, Chess Comes to Anooshirvan. It illustrates E2.1.78–89 (to E2.1.92):
- E2.1.78Then Bozorgmehr set board and men in line,Before the throne where sleepless fortunes shine.
- E2.1.79He said to chiefs and Mobadan, “Be wise;Attend his words and judge where counsel lies.”
- E2.1.80The sage transformed the board to warlike ground,The king at center, with his troops around.
- E2.1.81He drew the forces up on left and right,With eager footmen foremost in the fight.
- E2.1.82Beside the king, the counselor had place,To guide his thought when battle changed its face.
- E2.1.83On either flank the elephants were set,As though for war the opposing armies met.
- E2.1.84Beside them stood the chargers for the fray,With two wise riders placed in that array.
- E2.1.85The warrior Rukhs stood mounted on each wing,And fought on right and left to guard the king.
- E2.1.86He set the board, then challenged Hind’s own peer,And played three games before the court austere;
- E2.1.87Three times they strove, three times the sage prevailed,While all the Indian envoy’s tactics failed.
- E2.1.88The envoy out of Hind was vexed and stirred,Amazed by all he witnessed and had heard.
- E2.1.89He marveled at that man of sleepless mind,That wizard-sage whose equal none could find.
