Faranak Entrusts Her Son to the Herdsman
From A5.3, The Birth of Fereydoon. It illustrates A5.3.15–22:
- A5.3.15When Faranak, his wise and faithful wife,Beheld the ruin of her husband’s life,
- A5.3.16She fled in grief when Abtin’s days were done; Her heart was filled with love for her young son.
- A5.3.17She sought the meadow where Barmayeh fed,And wept before the herdsman as she said:
- A5.3.18“Protect this nursing child and keep him near;Receive him as a father; hold him dear.
- A5.3.19Nourish my son on Barmayeh’s rich flow,And guard the child wherever he may go.
- A5.3.20If payment you desire, my life I give;Ask what you will; only let my child live.”
- A5.3.21The herdsman said, “Your wish shall be obeyed;Like one who serves your son, I pledge my aid.”
- A5.3.22She left her infant son within his care;He was to guard the child from every snare.
