Manuchehr's Army with Armored Elephants
From A6.19, Manuchehr Marches for Vengeance. It illustrates A6.19.21–31:
- A6.19.21Two ranks of battle elephants stretched wide,Two thirds of a farsang, marching side by side.
- A6.19.22Of these, full sixty bore gold thrones on high,With varied jewels blazing to the eye.
- A6.19.23Three hundred more bore baggage for the train,And moved beneath their burdens on the plain.
- A6.19.24Three hundred battle elephants came last,In armor bound from forehead downwards fast.
- A6.19.25Their bodies vanished under plate and gear;Except their eyes, no naked flesh showed clear.
- A6.19.26From Tammisheh the army reached the plain,Its ordered ranks advancing in a chain.
- A6.19.27Bold Gharan led three hundred thousand horse,All fighting riders gathered in that force.
- A6.19.28Famed men in jowshans, heavy gorz in hand,Like raging lions charged to the command.
- A6.19.29Their purple swords flashed brightly through the sky;Kaveh’s standard streamed before them high.
- A6.19.30Then elephant-bodied Gharan rode besideManuchehr from Narvan’s woods in martial pride.
- A6.19.31Manuchehr viewed his army, broad and deep,And spread the battle lines in ordered sweep.
