The Simorgh Seizes the Infant
From A7.2, The Strange Birth of Zal. It illustrates A7.2.48–55:
- A7.2.48When hunger seized the Simorgh’s waiting brood,She rose on mighty wings in search of food.
- A7.2.49She saw below a suckling child who cried,The earth around him like a boiling tide.
- A7.2.50Rock was his cradle, dust his nurse alone; No cloth, no milk; he lay upon the stone.
- A7.2.51Dark, wretched dust lay heaped on every side;Above his head the sun burned fierce and wide.
- A7.2.52Had leopard been his mother or his sire,Its shade might guard him from the sun’s hot fire.
- A7.2.53God filled the Simorgh’s heart with pity mild; She lost all thought of feeding on the child.
- A7.2.54She dropped from cloud with talons opened wide,And seized him from the burning mountainside.
- A7.2.55She bore him swiftly back to Alborz height,Where nest and brood were hidden from all sight.
