Sahm Refuses the Offered Crown
From B1.1, Nohzar Accedes to the Throne. It illustrates B1.1.26–33:
- B1.1.26Iran’s great chiefs came out on foot to meet,And laid their grief before him at his feet:
- B1.1.27“Nohzar has turned from wisdom’s ancient way,And drives the land toward ruin and decay.
- B1.1.28His wakeful fortune sleeps; his glory fades,The god-bestowed farr withdraws into the shades.
- B1.1.29If you would take the crown and royal seat,The realm beneath your hand would rise complete.
- B1.1.30We all would serve you, faithful to your claim,And bind our lives and honor to your name.”
- B1.1.31But Sahm replied: “Speak not such words,” he said;“How could the Maker bless so false a tread?
- B1.1.32Who dares pronounce that claim upon this earthWhile Nohzar lives, of Kayanian birth?
- B1.1.33If Manuchehr’s own daughter ruled instead,The dust before her feet would be my bed.
