Afrasiab Vows Vengeance before Pashang
From B1.2, Pashang Hears of Manuchehr’s Death. It illustrates B1.2.16–25:
- B1.2.16He came before his father, girded fast,His heart with ancient vengeance overcast:
- B1.2.17“I am well fitted for the lions’ fray;Iran’s sepahbod I can match today.
- B1.2.18Had Zadeshm raised his sword when young and strong,He had not left the world in shame and wrong.
- B1.2.19Had he for vengeance bound his battle-belt,Iran beneath his mastery had knelt.
- B1.2.20What Zadeshm left half-finished, I will bear:Revenge, and war, and kimiya, I dare.
- B1.2.21My sharpened sword shall open every way;My hour of rising up has come to stay.”
- B1.2.22Hot haste ran through old Pashang’s royal frameWhen he beheld his son of towering fame.
- B1.2.23A lion’s chest and arms, an elephant’s might; His shadow stretched for several mil in sight.
- B1.2.24His tongue a cutting sword, his heart a sea,His hand a rain-cloud pouring bounty free.
- B1.2.25Then Pashang said, “Let battle now begin;Lead all my troops and seek the realm to win.
