Afrasiab Sends the Night Courier
From B1.3, Afrasiab Invades Iran. It illustrates B1.3.21–30:
- B1.3.21Afrasiab surveyed his ranks by night; He called a swift hiyun, prepared for flight.
- B1.3.22He wrote to Pashang: “Fortune comes to hand; What we have sought now answers our command.
- B1.3.23If Nohzar’s army breaks beneath our feet,They are our quarry, trampled in defeat.
- B1.3.24And Sahm has followed Manuchehr in death; No more can he ride out with living breath.
- B1.3.25In Iran Sahm alone inspired my fear; Now he is gone, the road to vengeance clear.
- B1.3.26Old Zal now builds his father’s tomb and weeps; No foot or wing for war the mourner keeps.
- B1.3.27By now Shamasas sits in Nimruz crowned,With world-illuming splendor spread around.
- B1.3.28In every task, the proper moment choose;A wise and loyal friend’s advice then use.
- B1.3.29If when the moment comes a man delays,No equal chance returns in later days.”
- B1.3.30The swift hiyun seemed winged across the night,And reached the lord whose farr shone clear and bright.
