Zal Rends His Garments for Nohzar
From B1.12, Zal Hears of Nohzar’s Death. It illustrates B1.12.9–20 (to B1.12.21):
- B1.12.9They came to Zal in anguish and despair,Their faces gashed, dust thick upon their hair.
- B1.12.10They cried: “Our noble Shah, so just and wise!O crown of kings beneath the open skies!
- B1.12.11Protector of Iran, the realm’s strong stay,The chief of crowned men now has passed away.
- B1.12.12His royal head lies crownless on the ground,And royal blood’s own scent is all around.
- B1.12.13The grasses bowed before the Sun in shame,Each growing plant bent low before its flame.
- B1.12.14In him Fereydoon’s living sign was known,And earth served humbly where his hoof had flown.
- B1.12.15Before renowned men Nohzar lost his head; Now we must rise in vengeance for the dead.
- B1.12.16We draw our blades against Turanian pride,Renew the ancient feud and turn the tide.
- B1.12.17The heavens weep with us in crimson rain,Our sorrow bears witness to grief and pain.
- B1.12.18Let none withhold his tears or check his rage; For blood with blood must answer age to age.”
- B1.12.19The crowd wept bitterly with hearts afire,Consumed with grief and burning with desire.
- B1.12.20Then Zal himself tore garments from his frame,And sank to dust in sorrow and in shame.
