Famine Brings Turan's Envoy to Zav
From B1.14, Zav, the Son of Tahmasp, Is Elected Shah. It illustrates B1.14.19–26:
- B1.14.19Then hardship came and famine gripped the land,The earth and plants grew thirsty on every hand.
- B1.14.20A famine came: no rain, no drop of dew;The fields lay bare, no living green thing grew.
- B1.14.21The herbs were parched, the soil was cracked and dry,And bread against a dirham men would buy.
- B1.14.22Five months the armies faced each other still,And fought each day with hard, relentless will.
- B1.14.23But famine drained their strength and broke their pride,Till warp and weft of both their armies died.
- B1.14.24Then both sides cried: “The fault is ours alone; This suffering is the harvest we have sown.”
- B1.14.25At last an envoy came to Zav and said:“This passing world has filled our lives with dread.
- B1.14.26Let us divide the earth in fair accord,And bless each other, sheathing every sword.”
